Episcleritis
Episcleritis is a condition caused by the inflammation of the tissue which connects the conjunctiva and the sclera. This tissue is known as the episclera.
Symptoms of Episcleritis
Episcleritis is easily confused with conjunctivitis (known as Pink Eye) as the main symptoms are a red appearance to the eye and mild soreness or discomfort. However, unlike conjunctivitis, there is no discharge or tearing. There is often no apparent cause of Episcleritis but it can be related to conditions such as arthritis, lupus and bowel disease. Rosacea can also be an underlying cause, as can herpes, gout and TB.
Episcleritis is diagnosed during an eye exam using a Slit Lamp.
Treatments for Episcleritis
Generally, no treatment is needed. Artifical tears can be used to soothe the soreness and reduce inflammation. In severe cases, mild steroids and anti-inflammatories may be prescribed.
