Entropion
Entropion also stops the eyelids from closing properly but, unlike Ectropion, the lid (usually the lower lid) turns inward, towards the eye. This leaves the eyelashes rubbing against the surface of the eye (including the conjunctivia and the cornea), causing irritation. In severe cases the lashes may scratch the cornea, resulting in infection, scarring or even impairing vision.
Causes of Entropion
Generally, Entropion is age-related; as the tissue of the eyelids ages, the muscles sag. Often, the sufferer will only notice severe discomfort when they close their eyes tightly or blink harshly.
Symptoms of Entropion
- crusting around the eyelids
- eye irritation, particularly in the mornings
- excessive tearing
- feeling like there's something in the eye
Treatments for Entropion
- artifical tears, eyedrops or lubricating ointments
- eye patch worn at night
- surgery on the eyelids
