Ectropion
Ectropion is a condition that develops in the eyelid, usually the lower lid. Ectropion causes the tissues in the eyelid to relax, this makes the eyelid sag outwards and stops the eyelid from closing properly.
Without the protection of the eyelid, tear loss (through evaporation and from lack of retention) increases and the eye becomes dry and irritated.
Causes of Ectropion
The most common causes of Ectropion are :
- age-related muscle weakness
- facial nerve palsy
- scarring of the eyelid (due to external factors)
Other factors such as underlying conditions (lupus, atopic dermatitis) may also cause Ectropion.
Treatments for Ectropion
There are three main treatment options :
- artifical tears, eyedrops or lubricating ointments
- surgery to repair the weakened/damaged muscles and tendons
- wearing an eye patch at night
Ectropion should be treated as it can lead to eye infections, damage to the cornea and problems with vision.
