Conjunctivitis
Treatments for Conjunctivitis
Allergic Conjunctivitis is treated by dealing with the underlying allergy.
Bacterial Conjunctivitis is generally treated with anti-bacterial eyedrops. Often these are prescribed for all types of conjunctivitis to ensure that a bacterial infection does not develop.
Viral Conjunctivitis usually clears on its own.
Whichever kind of conjunctivitis you suffer from, you can ease the discomfort by applying a warm compress (a clean cloth soaked in warm water) to closed eyes for five to ten minutes at a time.
Preventing Conjunctivitis
Good hygiene is the best way to avoid conjunctivitis.
- don't rub your eyes
- change pillowcases regularly
- clean and handle contact lenses properly
- don't share face cloths and towels
- never share eye cosmetics
- replace eye cosmetics often
- wash your hands frequently and always before you touch your eyes/eyelids
Obviously, Allergic Conjunctivitis sufferers should avoid the allergen as much as is possible.
