Dry Eye Syndrome
Your eyes are coated with a thin film of tears. This layer lubricates the eyes and aids vision. Dry Eye Syndrome (Keratitis Sicca) is a common complaint, particularly in the over-forties, that affects this tear film.
There are three layers of the tear film :
The Mucus Layer The thinnest layer, it is produced by and coats the cells in the conjunctiva (the clear skin over the eye).
The Aqueous Layer The thickest layer, this is a watery solution that keeps the eye moist.
The Lipids Layer This layer serves to protect the middle layer, it is produced by the meibomian and zeis glands.
The most common cause of Dry Eye Syndrome is aging. However, there are other causes and many can (and need to be) treated. Some are as simple as the environment (being in a hot, dry room, for example) but others have medical implications.
